Villanovafranca info
Villanovafranca is an ancient medieval village, an important agricultural production centre (especially saffron), and is home to a significant Nuragic heritage.
Located at 296 metres above sea level in the central-southern part of Sardinia, Villanovafranca extends among the rolling hills of Marmilla in the province of Medio Campidano. With approximately 1,400 residents, it is an important agricultural production centre, particularly for cereals, also famous for its olives, grapes, almonds, and, above all, saffron, a DOP product.
The village's ancient history was first documented in 1219. After an important historical period during the Giudicati era, the territory briefly passed under the rule of the Aragonese, then to the barony of Las Plassas, and finally became a fiefdom of the Zapata family until independence in 1839.
The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was later inhabited in the Punic and Roman eras, and is dotted with archaeological sites. The most notable example is the nuraghe Su Mulinu, less than a kilometre from the village, dating back to 1500 BC and composed of various construction types, such as corridors and false domes. The site was abandoned around the 4th century BC. Inside one of its towers, the only example of a Nuragic altar from the early Iron Age was found: a stone carved with vertical motifs and an effigy of the Moon goddess. The finds from this archaeological area are housed in the Civic Archaeological Museum of the same name, located in one of the village main squares.
Another site of particular interest to visitors is the “go-kart track San Lorenzo”, with its track of over a kilometre.
Distances: Cagliari (town and Elmas Airport): 55-60 km; Oristano: 73 km; sea and beaches: approximately 65 km from Cagliari's Poetto beach.
